Long House, Bishopscourt
Description
House Efstathiou suffered from dated planning and space flow and was disconnected from its pool.
The dark and pokey entrance sequence was opened up to create a new hallway and guest suite. The old terrace stairway down to the pool tucked in under the wide eaves was internalized with a new curved glass screen – flooding the playroom on the lower ground floor below and the main study above with light.
The kitchen was modernized and the living areas were cleared of internal walls to open up the space and flow onto the newly built deep covered veranda terrace; wide enough to accommodate an outdoor dining and lounging area, complete with fireplace and sliding louvered screens all round. From here the views over the pool and cascading gardens lift to the amazing mountain views typical of the Bishopscourt area.
The bedrooms were all refurbished and opened up to a wide new deck and the bathrooms were all renovated and modernized with a new set of his and her en-suite bathrooms flanking the main bedroom. The one small and dark bedroom to the rear of the house was incorporated into the passage to break the long thin circulation route and to create a new pajama lounge for the growing family.
The pool was landscaped with new flagstones and finished off with a new poolside gazebo grand enough to dine and entertain under. The overall result was an efficient make over to bring the house into the 21st century.
The client’s needs were tested against the budget throughout the project, which led to a number of different schemes, but they were unanimous on the final design layouts, and the resultant new forms. The overall execution and management of the project by the contractor, PS Projects, was painless and they were a pleasure to work with, completing with a strong finish throughout.
